No. 7 Golden Eagles Stunned By Gators' Second-Half Rally

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team grabbed a lead for the fourth time in four games, but this time the Golden Eagles were unable to hold it.

The Golden Eagles surrendered a pair of second-half goals and fell to San Francisco State, 2-1, Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (3-1, 2-1 CCAA) was ranked seventh in the nation entering the match.

Ann Marie Tangorra scored the only goal for the Golden Eagles, her team-leading fifth of the season. Liz Franco picked up the assist on the goal and set a new CCAA career assist mark with 33.

It was a frustrating night otherwise for the Golden Eagles, who had a 16-5 advantage in shots, but were symied by San Francisco State goalie Annicia Jones, who made nine saves. Gabriella Batmani, in her first start of the season for the Golden Eagles, made three saves.

The Gators (3-1-1, 2-1 CCAA) tied the score at 1-1 in the 54th minute when Carly Bliss knocked home the rebound of a shot by Sarah Whelan. Batmani went high to bat the shot out of danger with both hands, but Bliss got the rebound and tied the game.

San Francisco State got the game-winning goal in the 77th minute when Myriah Johnson was able to head the ball in a crowd off a cross from Nicole Vanni.

The Golden Eagles allowed only three shots in the second half, but two of them wound up in the net.

Jones, meanwhile, made some spectacular saves to keep the Gators in the game. Less than three minutes after San Francisco State tied the game, Tangorra had a shot deflected by Jones and Franco blasted a shot from right in front that was knocked away by Jones. Alex Conley got to the loose ball, but sent a shot just wide.

Then, after the Gators took the lead, Franco had two more prime chances, one that was stopped by Jones and the other that went just wide.

Franco had seven shots, four of them one net, while Tangorra added four shots, three on net.

San Francisco State posted its second win over the Golden Eagles in the past three meetings.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home match on Sunday against Cal State Monterey Bay.
