LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team kept UC San Diego's high-powered offense in check for the first 15 innings of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.
The Golden Eagles, though, saw the Tritons explode for eight runs in the seventh inning Friday to erase a 4-0 deficit and Cal State L.A. dropped a 10-4 decision at Triton Field. Cal State L.A. (17-22, 15-15 CCAA) ended up surrending 16 hits and UC San Diego evened the series at one game each.
Cal State L.A. had limited UC San Diego to just one run in Thursday's 2-1 win, a run that was manufactured by an attempted double steal. The Golden Eagles, behind the solid starting pitching of
Wally Goodline, then blanked the Tritons for the first six innings of Friday's contest until everything fell apart.
Jordan Castro was 2-for-3 with a two-run home run for Cal State L.A., while
Mario Ramirez was 1-2 with two walks, a hit by pitch and a two-run single.
Kyle Saul was 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Tritons, including a go-ahead two-run triple in the seventh. Robert Sedin was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Aaron Bauman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Vance Albitz was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Goodline and UC San Diego starter Matt Rossman were locked in a scoreless battle until the Golden Eagles broke through in the sixth.
Sam Wiley started the rally with a double and Castro followed with a two-run home run to stake Cal State L.A. to a 2-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles stretched the lead to 4-0 in the seventh.
Brett Whalen walked and
Joe Park and
Matt Miraldi followed with single to load the bases. Ramirez then delivered a two-run single to extend the Golden Eagles' lead.
Goodline finally tired in the seventh and left after the Tritons loaded the bases with no one out. The assault continued against three Cal State L.A. relievers. Six hits and five walks later, the Tritons had emerged with an 8-4 lead.
UC San Diego added two more runs in the eighth to account for the final margin.
Richard Kilbury pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win for the Tritons, while Austin Taylor finished up with a scoreless inning.
#J.R. Bromberg#, despite only facing two batters in the seventh, was tagged with the loss.
The series will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader at Cal State L.A.'s Reeder Field beginning at noon.
