Golden Eagles Return To Conference Play With A Big Win

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team returned to California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a flourish.

The Golden Eagles, coming off a disappointing three-game non-conference series sweep at the hands of Cal State San Marcos last week, scored early and often in a 16-2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Thursday night at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (13-13, 11-6 CCAA) snapped its three-game losing streak and won its seventh consecutive conference contest.

Cal State L.A. collected 15 hits in the game, including a grand slam home run by Sam Wiley, who finished the game with six runs batted in. Matt Miraldi and Joe Park had three hits each, while Mario Ramirez scored three times. Cliff Quick, Mark Sunga and Jesus Campos had two hits each.

Wally Goodline was the beneficiary of the offensive support and Cal State L.A.'s starter turned in his best performance of the season. Goodline allowed only six hits and two runs while tossing the first complete game of the season for the Golden Eagles. Goodline walked only one and struck out a career-high 11.

Cal State L.A. broke the game open early and chased Cal State Dominguez Hills starter Kody Kurowski in an eight-run second inning. The Golden Eagles added two runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth. Wiley smacked his grand slam home run to highlight the fifth inning for the Golden Eagles.

Kevin Logan had three of the six hits for the Toros (19-10, 14-7 CCAA). He drove in the Toros' first run in the fifth inning, while Kevin Pillar singled in a run in the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak to a school-record 27 straight games.

After a quiet first inning, the Golden Eagles exploded with eight runs on eight hits in the second inning. Campos delivered a bases-loaded single to drive in the first run and Park followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0. Quick singled in a run to make it 4-0 and Chris Matzner drove in a run with a groundout. Wiley doubled in a run to make it 6-0 and drove Kurowski from the game in the process. Miraldi picked up an infield hit to greet reliever Sean Wardour and make it 7-0 and Sunga had a run-scoring double before the inning was over.

Cal State L.A. extended its lead to 10-0 in the fourth inning. Ramirez tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wiley and Miraldi doubled and later scored on an error.

After the Toros got one run back in the fifth on a run-scoring double by Logan, the Golden Eagles retaliated with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Quick had a run-scoring single, Park scored on a wild pitch and Wiley drilled a grand slam home run to stretch the Golden Eagles' lead to 16-1.

The two teams will continue the four-game conference series with a single game Friday at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
