LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was unable to do anything to cool off red-hot Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles gave up 29 runs and 33 hits and dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the California Collegiate Athletic Association leaders, 22-8 and 7-2 Sunday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (5-9, 3-5 CCAA) dropped all four games in the conference series to the Coyotes (11-2, 11-1 CCAA).
The Coyotes wasted little time in breaking open the first game, scoring seven times in the second inning and eight times in the third to take a commanding 16-0 lead after three innings. The Coyotes tacked on two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Cal State San Bernardino got home runs from Ryan Hulbert and Andrew Harrison. Erik Ornelas was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI, Matthew Winn was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, Cody Madison was 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI, Harrison had two hits and scored four runs, while Kyle Davis scored three runs for the Coyotes.
Jordan Castro was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run and four RBI for the Golden Eagles, while
Mario Ramirez was 3-for-3 and scored three runs. He also had a home run.
The Golden Eagles got two shutout innings from outfielder/designated hitter
Mark Sunga and two innings of work from second baseman
Brendan McQuaid. The two position players combined for no walks and six strikeouts in their combined four innings of work.
Trevor Longfellow made it through eight innings for the Coyotes to get the win. He allowed 10 hits, but only two earned runs.
Cal State L.A. jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the nightcap on a two-run home run by
Sam Wiley, but the Coyotes scored five times in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. After Cal State San Bernardino head coach Don Parnell was ejected for arguing a ruling that temporarily took two runs off the board, the Coyotes took matters into their own hands and got a two-run single by Ornelas, a run-scoring double by Madison, bases-loaded walks to Hulbert and Chris LeFay. The controversy erupted when Ethan Chapman hit a comebacker to pitcher
Cliff Quick with the bases loaded. Quick fired home for the first out, but Wiley's throw to first hit Chapman and bounded into right field, apparently scoring two runs.
After an appeal, Chapman was ruled out for running out of the base line when he was hit by the throw and runners were returned to second and third. Parnell argued, was ejected, and Ornelas came back after the delay and gave his team the lead with the two-run single.
Daniel Stenavich went six strong innings to get the win, allowing only four hits and the two runs. Garrett Nelsen struck out two in one inning of scoreless relief to end it.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a four-game series at San Francisco State beginning on Friday.
