LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team finally put an end to a frustrating home losing streak.
The Golden Eagles raced out to a 19-point halftime lead and beat Cal State Stanislaus, 75-59, Thursday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (14-12, 10-11) moved into a four-way tie for fifth place in the conference with the victory.
Cal State L.A. had dropped six straight home games and hadn't won at home since a victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Jan. 8.
The Golden Eagles, who have clinched a spot in the eight-team CCAA Championship Tournament, are now tied with Chico State, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. The regular season will conclude on Friday and tournament seedings will be set. Cal State L.A. will be at either Cal Poly Pomona, Humboldt State, Cal State San Bernardino or Cal State Dominguez Hills on Tuesday.
Chris Robinson led the way for the Golden Eagles with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Dwayne Jones added 15 points, six rebounds and seven assists, while
Carl Hoffman had 14 points and five rebounds.
Chad Johnson had 19 points to lead Cal State Stanislaus (10-16, 6-15 CCAA). Jordan Stokes and Matt Ibewiro had 12 points each for the Warriors.
Cal State L.A. shot 54.3 percent from the floor and also owned a hefty 47-27 rebounding advantage.
Leland Jones had a team-high nine rebounds and
Mark Dorsey added eight rebounds.
The Golden Eagles also knocked down 19-of-27 free-throw attempts, while Cal State Stanislaus made 11-of-16. The Warriors made just 31.9 percent of their shots.
Cal State L.A. trailed only once, at 4-2, but then scored the next nine points to take the lead for good. A basket by Hoffman tied the game, a basket by Robinson gave the Golden Eagles the lead and a three-point play by
Nuno Furtado and a jumper by Robinson finished the run.
Cal State L.A. took its first double-digit lead at 30-19 after a basket by
Leland Jones and a 3-pointer by
Dwayne Jones gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the half, 43-22. The Golden Eagles settled for a 43-24 halftime edge.
Cal State L.A. led by at least 13 points the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles took their biggest lead of the game, 64-39, after a layup by
Chris Fields with 10:41 remaining. Cal State L.A. kept a comfortable edge despite not making a basket the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-12 from the free-throw line down the stretch.
Cal State L.A. will end the regular season with a home game against Chico State on Friday. The Golden Eagles will honor their two seniors, Fields and
Dwayne Jones, in pre-game ceremonies.
