SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team showed some impressive resiliency Saturday night and recorded an important California Collegiate Athletic Association win.
The Golden Eagles, one night after a stunning overtime loss to San Francisco State, raced out to a 14-point halftime lead and went on to beat Cal State Monterey Bay, 65-57, in the Kelp Bed. Cal State L.A. (13-10, 9-9 CCAA) earned a split on the road for the second straight weekend.
Cal State L.A. never trailed and led by as many as 16 points in the second half. Cal State Monterey Bay (7-16, 5-13 CCAA) closed to within four points in the final minute, but Cal State L.A. made some key plays down the stretch to preserve the win.
Dwayne Jones had 14 points to lead four Golden Eagles in double figures.
Chris Fields added 13 points,
Chris Robinson had 11 points and five rebounds,
Mark Dorsey had 10 points and four rebounds on 5-of-5 shooting and
Carl Hoffman had 10 points and five rebounds.
Leland Jones had six points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Sean Jergo had a game-high 16 points to lead the Otters, while Derrick Anderson added 10 points.
Cal State L.A. shot 37.9 percent from the floor and limited the Otters to 36 percent shooting. The Golden Eagles made 19-of-24 from the free-throw line (79.2 percent) and forced 19 turnovers while committing only 11. Both teams had 33 rebounds.
The Golden Eagles led from start to finish. Fields opened the game with a 3-pointer and he scored the first five points for Cal State L.A. Back-to-back baskets by Hoffman gave the Golden Eagles a 12-point lead at 23-11 halfway through the period. After the Otters closed to within 25-20, a free throw by
Nuno Furtado and a basket by Hoffman pushed the lead back to eight points.
The Golden Eagles closed the half on a 10-3 run and took a 39-25 halftime lead on a basket by
Dwayne Jones.
Cal State Monterey Bay scored the first six points of the second half to pull to within 39-31, but a three-point play by Fields and a layup by
Dwayne Jones built the lead back to 44-31.
A jumper by Fields gave the Golden Eagles their first 16-point lead of the game and a basket by Dorsey kept the lead at 50-34.
Cal State Monterey Bay made another run and pulled to within 57-52 with 4:18 to go, a basket by
Dwayne Jones and an offensive rebound and basket by Dorsey opened the lead back to 61-52 with two minutes to go.
The Otters got as close as four points at 61-57 with 35 seconds to go, but two free throws each by
Chris Robinson and
Dwayne Jones down the stretch kept the lead for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will play its final four conference games at home, beginning with a contest next Friday against Cal Poly Pomona.
