TURLOCK-- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team saw its bid for a second consecutive California Collegiate Athletic Association championship come up painfully short Sunday.
The Golden Eagles battled San Francisco State to a 1-1 tie in the championship game, but the Gators won the conference title in a penalty-kick shootout, 3-2, in Warrior Stadium. Cal State L.A. (15-3-1) will now await the announcement of the NCAA Division II Tournament field, which will take place on Monday at 4 p.m.
Cal State L.A. was ranked fourth in the West Region entering the CCAA Tournament and went 1-0-1 with a win over Cal State Stanislaus and the tie with San Francisco State. The Gators (11-4-5) captured their first-ever CCAA title in women's soccer and earned the CCAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles, who won the 2009 CCAA championship, reached the championship match for the third time in the past four years. Cal State L.A. came up short against Chico State in 2007 and against San Francisco State on Sunday in penalty-kick shootouts to determine the conference champion.
Last season, the Golden Eagles left nothing to chance in a 4-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills for the title.
Cal State L.A. had a big statistical edge, but could only score one goal against San Francisco State's tough defense. The game was played in cold and rainy conditions on Cal State Stanislaus' Warrior Field. The Golden Eagles had a 21-7 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. San Francisco State goalkeeper Annica Jones had eight saves, while Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Gabriella Batmani made one save.
The Golden Eagles had an 11-2 edge in shots in the opening half when both of the goals were scored. San Francisco State got on the board first when Michelle Spinner notched her sixth goal of the season in the 15th minute with assists from Carly Bliss and Myriah Johnson.
Liz Franco tied it less than three minutes later when she scored her 14th goal of the season with assists from
Stacey Rodwell and
Ann Marie Tangorra. Rodwell crossed the ball in front to Franco, who moved into a tie for the team scoring lead with Tangorra.
The Golden Eagles kept the pressure up and Tangorra had a bid just miss when her shot hit the crossbar and Franco was denied on a penalty kick by Jones a minute later.
San Francisco State opened the second half with a flurry and a header shot by Kara Cunningham hit the post in the 47th minute. The Gators had two quick corner kicks, but the Golden Eagles held.
Cal State L.A. had an outstanding bid by
Alex Conley in the final minute blocked by San Francisco State defender Nicole Smith before her shot could reach the net.
Cal State L.A. had a 5-0 edge in shots in the overtime periods, but could not break the tie.
Tangorra had a match-high six shots, Conley had five shots and Franco had four shots in the match.
Cal State L.A. had a seven-match winning streak snapped with the tie.
Cal State L.A. had four players make the All-Tournament Team. Franco, Conley,
Ann Marie Tangorra and
Melina Barragan were all named to the 11-player squad.
