Golden Eagles Advance To CCAA Title Game With A Thriller

Box Score

TURLOCK – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had a flair for the dramatic once again Friday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association semi-final match against host Cal State Stanislaus.

Alex Conley scored the golden goal in the second overtime to lift the Golden Eagles past the Warriors, 2-1, in Warrior Stadium. The win advances the Golden Eagles to the CCAA championship match, where they will face San Francisco State for the conference title at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Cal State L.A. (15-3), the defending conference champions, won its seventh straight match and ended the game in dramatic fashion for a second straight game. The Golden Eagles beat Cal Poly Pomona, 4-3, in double overtime last Sunday to wrap up the CCAA South Division title.

Cal State L.A. beat Cal State Stanislaus (12-6-1) for the second time this season on the Warriors' home field, also edging the Warriors, 2-1, during the regular season.

The Golden Eagles had a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Cal State L.A. also had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Gabriella Batmani made two saves for Cal State L.A. and the Golden Eagle defense cleared away another shot. Marriah Kessler, who entered the game in the 10th minute for starting goalie Millie Brown, made five saves for the Warriors.

Conley continued her recent hot streak, scoring for the fifth time in the last six games. She got the game-winner on Friday at 101:05 when she knocked in a shot from 15 yards away inside the left post to send the Golden Eagles to their second straight CCAA title match.

Ann Marie Tangorra opened the scoring for the Golden Eagles in the 15th minute when she drilled a shot from 23 yards outside the box and into the goal. It was her team-leading 14th goal of the season.

Cal State Stanislaus got the equalizer in the 62nd minute when freshman Karenee Demery, the conference's Most Valuable Offensive Player this season, knocked in a shot from 13 yards out for her 19th goal of the season. She had an assist from Alisa Barlow.
That's how the score remained until Conley's game-winner.

Tangorra (7), Liz Franco (4) and Conley (4) combined for 15 shots in the game and all seven attempts that were on goal.

Cal State L.A. will face San Francisco State for the second time this season. The Golden Eagles dropped a 2-1 decision to the Gators in Los Angeles on Sept. 17. The winner Sunday receives the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Cal State L.A. was ranked fourth and San Francisco State seventh in the most recent rankings. Six teams from the West Region will qualify.
