LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team saw its string of games winding up in shutouts end at 11 and it cost the Golden Eagles an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles watched Sonoma State erase a 1-0 deficit with 17 seconds left in regulation and the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw Friday night at Jesse Owens Stadium in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex.
Cal State L.A. (7-4-1, 6-4-1 CCAA) had taken the lead just 3:20 into the game when Brennen Brodersen headed in a corner kick from David Hauser. The Golden Eagles held that lead until the final minute when Cam Vickers hit a shot from outside the box that hit in the upper left corner of the net.
The two teams then battled evenly through two overtime periods with each team having a golden opportunity to win it.
Cal State L.A.'s first 11 games ended in shutouts -- seven in victories and four in defeats. Cal State L.A.'s defense was outstanding once again and limited Sonoma State's high-powered offense to very few good scoring chances.
Sonoma State (8-4-1, 6-4-1 CCAA) and Cal State L.A. remained tied with 19 points in the CCAA, which places them both fifth overall. Sonoma State is third in the North Division, while Cal State L.A. is third in the South.
The top four teams will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament. Five games remain in the regular season.
Sonoma State ended up with a 17-16 edge in shots and a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks. Thaddeus Caraway made six saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Sonoma State goalie Juan Sosa made four saves.
The Golden Eagles led for most of the game thanks to a quick goal off a corner kick. Hauser sent in a dangerous cross to the box and Brodersen went up in a crowd and drilled it into the net for his second goal of the season.
The Golden Eagles controlled much of the first half and had an 8-5 edge in shots.
Sonoma State began the second half with more energy and almost tied the game in the 58th minute when Caraway was able to just deflect a free kick by Vickers over the crossbar.
The Golden Eagles just missed a bid to go up 2-0 in the 71st minute when Sosa made a nice save on a shot by Tyler Coombes off a cross from Joe Davis.
Sonoma State thought it had the equalizer with a little more than six minutes remaining, but a foul had been called before the shot was taken.
With time winding down, Vickers hit his perfectly-placed shot to send the game into overtime.
The best chance in the extra periods came when Sonoma State's Aaron Glover made a nifty move around a defender and sent a shot from a sharp angle in the box that glanced off the outside of the far post in the first overtime.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Humboldt State.
