SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team put itself in position for a big California Collegiate Athletic Association victory, but Cal State San Bernardino used a big second-half run to maintain its conference lead.
The Golden Eagles took a short-lived lead with 11:45 to go, only to see Cal State San Bernardino respond with a game-breaking 20-4 run over the next six minutes and go on to post a 76-62 victory. Cal State L.A. (9-4, 5-3 CCAA) dropped its second straight game and also lost to Cal State San Bernardino for the 22nd consecutive time. Cal State San Bernardino (9-3, 7-1 CCAA) leads the conference, while Cal State L.A. slipped into a four-way tie for fourth place in a tightly-packed conference race.
Carl Hoffman had a team-high 16 points to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures.
Dwayne Jones added 12 points, while
Chris Fields just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Nuno Furtado had eight points and six rebounds.
Cal State San Bernardino was efficient against Cal State L.A.'s defense, shooting 51 percent for the game to just 40 percent for the Golden Eagles. Cal State L.A. came into the game No. 1 in the conference and No. 4 in the nation in field-goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 35.8 percent.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 39-30 rebounding edge, but could not overcome 18 turnovers to only 10 for the Coyotes.
Corey Gaston scored 20 points to lead five Cal State San Bernardino players in double figures. Greg Williams had 16 points and six rebounds, Lawrence Tyson had 12 points and six rebounds, Bryan LeDuc had 10 points and Devon Davis had 10 points and three rebounds for the Coyotes.
Cal State L.A. was able to climb out of an 11-point first-half deficit and eventually battled back to take a quick lead in the second half before the Coyotes' made their game-breaking surge.
Cal State San Bernardino opened up a 26-15 lead with seven minutes left in the first half, but Cal State L.A. then began to climb back into the game. The Golden Eagles got a 3-pointer by
Chris Robinson to slice the deficit to 29-25 and the Golden Eagles got baskets late in the half from Fields and Hoffman to make it 38-33 at halftime.
The Golden Eagles' surge carried over into the second half. After the Coyotes took a seven-point lead, 48-41, Cal State L.A. went on an 8-0 run to take its first -- and only -- lead of the second half. A basket by Hoffman started the run and a 3-pointer by Fields made it 48-46. Fields made two free throws following a technical foul on Cal State San Bernardino and a free throw by
Mark Dorsey gave the Golden Eagles a 49-48 lead with 11:45 to go.
The lead lasted less than a minute because Davis scored on the Coyotes' next possession and Cal State San Bernardino never looked back. A pair of free throws by Furtado got the Golden Eagles to within one point at 52-51, but the Coyotes outscored the Golden Eagles, 16-2, to take a 68-53 lead with 5:13 remaining.
Cal State L.A. was unable to close to within 13 points the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will continue its road swing with a game at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday night.
