Golden Eagles Tie Program Record For Goals In 9-0 Win

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team continued its non-conference dominance Saturday with its third straight shutout win.
 
The Golden Eagles put up a program record-tying nine goals and beat Academy of Art, 9-0, Saturday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (3-0) has outscored its first three opponents by a 16-0 margin.
 
It was a record-breaking night for junior Liz Franco, who assisted on one of the Golden Eagles' four first-half goals. That assist gives her 18 for her Cal State L.A. career, which is a new program standard. She also scored a first-half goal.
 
Gabbi Segall scored three goals to tie a program single-game record and also added an assist.
 
Jasmin Stuemper scored a pair of goals, while Erica Thomas had a goal and two assists. Ann Marie Tangorra and Alex Conley also added goals for the third straight game.
 
Jessie Walworth made four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles in the first half and Heather Emswiler worked a scoreless second half in goal for Cal State L.A.
 
Melissa Co made nine saves for the Urban Knights (0-3), who are members of the Pacific West Conference. Emi Sullivan also had a strong game for Academy of Art with four shots and three good scoring chances in the first half.
 
Cal State L.A. had a 33-6 advantage in shots, 19-5 in the first half and 14-1 in the second.
 
The Golden Eagles scored four goals in the first half with Segall opening the scoring with two goals in a five-minute span. She scored with assists from Amanda Matthews and Natalie Martin in the 13th minute and added her second goal after a beautiful pass from Matthews that split the defense and found Segall in full stride.
 
Franco made it 3-0 in the 25th minute when she knocked in the rebound of a hard shot by Conley and Conley scored in the 40th minute after a nice pass from Franco that gave her the record.
 
Stuemper scored the first of her two goals in the 58th minute with assists from Ayana Young and Tangorra and Tangorra scored her third goal of the season in the 72nd minute with an assist from Conley.
 
Segall recorded her hat trick with an assist from Thomas in the 79th minute and Thomas assisted on Stuemper's goal in the 85th minute. Thomas then scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Segall in the 87th minute to complete the scoring.
 
The nine goals tied the record set on Sept. 4, 2000 when the Golden Eagles blanked Cal State Monterey Bay, 9-0.
 
Cal State L.A. will open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Tuesday with a match at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
