LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team certainly put in the time and then some this week and the Golden Eagles put a dramatic finish to their third game in five days.
The Golden Eagles got a goal from
Liz Franco in the second overtime to complete a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Cal State Stanislaus in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (9-2, 6-2 CCAA) regained sole possession of the CCAA South Division lead with the victory.
The win capped a trying week for the Golden Eagles, who bounced back nicely from a disappointing overtime loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Wednesday by beating North Division leader Chico State on Friday and Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday.
Cal State Stanislaus (5-6, 1-6 CCAA) continued its unfortunate string of one-goal defeats. Five of the Warriors' six conference losses have come by one goal and two of them have come in double overtime.
Cal State L.A. had a 22-7 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Cal State Stanislaus goalie Millie Brown had nine saves, while Cal State L.A. goalie
Jessie Walworth made four saves.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. Bernadette Bettencourt sent a nice pass to Lisa Garcia, who got free and sent a perfectly-placed shot into the upper part of the net just above the fingertips of Walworth. The goal was Garcia's fifth of the season.
Cal State L.A. pressed the attack in search of the equalizer, but the Cal State Stanislaus defense stood tall time after time until the Golden Eagles finally tied it in the 67
th minute.
Jennifer Schafer got a pass from
Ann Marie Tangorra and her hard shot toward the lower left corner of the net just got past a diving Brown. The Cal State Stanislaus goalie was able to get some of the shot, but the ball trickled into the net to tie it.
The goal was the first of the season for Schafer, who is returning for the Golden Eagles after missing all the 2008 season because of injury.
Neither team threatened in the first overtime, but the Golden Eagles had a pair of big opportunities in the second overtime, including the game-winner. Tangorra had a good bid, but Brown made a diving stop of a shot headed toward the right corner.
Then, after a Cal State Stanislaus foul,
Amanda Matthews sent a free kick toward the goal and Franco went up high to head it into the right corner of the net for her fifth goal of the season. Franco now leads the team with 20 points on five goals and a program single-season record 10 assists.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a conference match at Cal State San Bernardino.
