Golden Eagles Post Second Consecutive Shutout Win

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team didn't have to wait long for its second victory of the 2009 season.

The Golden Eagles (2-0) posted their second consecutive shutout with a 3-0 win over Hawaii-Hilo Wednesday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. got goals from Alex Conley, Ann Marie Tangorra and Jasmin Stuemper and a second strong start in goal from Jessie Walworth.

Walworth made five saves, including one diving stop in the second half to preserve the shutout.

The Golden Eagles didn't win their second game of the season until the eighth contest in 2008 after starting the season 1-5-1.

Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 22-7 edge in shots and had a 15-3 advantage in the first half when the Golden Eagles scored twice to take early command of the game.

Hawaii-Hilo goalie Shanna Brown had an outstanding game for the Vulcans (0-4). She made 12 saves, several of them tremendous stops that thwarted golden scoring chances for Cal State L.A.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead just 5:21 into the game when Conley scored her second goal of the season thanks to a nifty pass from Amanda Matthews. The pass found Conley in full stride and she blasted a shot into the net.

Although Cal State L.A. kept the pressure on for the remainder of the first half, the score remained 1-0 until Tangorra scored her second goal of the season with assists from Liz Franco and Reauna Wong. The play started with a pass from Wong to Franco, who sent a perfect pass to Tangorra, who found the left corner of the goal in the 36th minute.

Stuemper scored the first goal of her Cal State L.A. career in the 74th minute with assists from Tangorra and Franco. The assist was Franco's fourth of the season and gives her 17 in her Cal State L.A. career, which ties her with Erika Prado for the program record. She tied a single-season record last year as a sophomore with nine.

Franco had a team-high six shots in the contest, while Tangorra had four.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a home match against Academy of Art.
