Golden Eagles Suffer Their First Loss Of The Season

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team gave up its first two goals of the season and fell from the ranks of the unbeaten Sunday.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but couldn't find the net again and lost to Cal State San Bernardino, 2-1, Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (5-1, 2-1 CCAA) hadn't allowed a goal in its first five games and had outscored its opponents, 20-0. The 5-0 start and the five consecutive shutouts were new program records.

The Coyotes (2-4, 1-1 CCAA), though, kept Cal State L.A.'s offense at bay after the early flurry and went on to record the conference victory. Cal State San Bernardino got goals from Jaclyn Clark and Kristin Gomez and goalkeeper Laura Lyons made six saves.

Cal State L.A. got its goal from Alex Conley and two saves from goalkeeper Jessie Walworth.

The Coyotes held a slim 11-10 edge in shots and both teams had one corner kick.

The Golden Eagles got on the board just 2:56 into the game when Conley scored her fifth goal of the season. Natalie Martin got the ball to Amanda Matthews, who sent a nice pass to Conley, who one-timed it into the goal.

Cal State San Bernardino, though, rebounded nicely and got the tying goal in the 25th minute from Clark with an assist from Unity Beddingfield.

The game stayed tied at 1-1 at halftime, but the Coyotes got what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 50th minute. Beddingfield picked up her second assist of the game when she got the ball to Gomez in front and she beat Walworth to the ball and shot it into an empty net.

The Cal State San Bernardino defense did a solid job holding the Golden Eagles to just five shots in the second half, only three of them on net. Liz Franco had a pair of attempts denied by Lyons in the second half.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with a road conference match at Cal State Monterey Bay.
