Golden Eagles Get Thrown For A Loss In CCAA Contest

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got thrown for a loss in an extra-inning California Collegiate Athletic Association defeat.

The Golden Eagles fell behind in the 10th inning and then failed to score after loading the bases with no one out in the bottom of the frame in a 5-4 loss to Cal State Stanislaus Friday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (24-14, 16-10 CCAA) had sent the game into extra innings after a two-out, pinch hit home run by Danne Quiroz in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Cal State Stanislaus (24-12, 14-11 CCAA) took a 5-4 lead in the top of the 10th when Kyle Loretelli was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force across the go-ahead run. Cal State L.A., though, quickly loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the inning. Ramirez reached on an infield single that bounded away from Cal State Stanislaus first baseman Joseph Pilatti. Ramirez took second on a wild pitch and Toby Davis drew a walk. Max Moya then reached when a throw to third after his bunt was dropped, allowing Ramirez to slide in safely.

That's when Warrior reliever Eric Cendejas went to work. He got Travis Tartamella to strike out swinging on a 3-2 pitch for the first out. Then, a few pitches after Ramirez stayed put at third base on an errant pitch that eluded catcher Chase Perez and rolled near the Warrior dugout, right fielder David Contreras made the play of the game. He caught a shallow fly ball off the bat of Jesus Campos for the second out of the inning and then threw out Ramirez trying to score at the plate to end the game.

Both teams ended up with 12 hits. Matt Miraldi had a pair of hits and drove in two runs for the Golden Eagles. Ramirez, Campos and Chris Matzner also had two hits each.

Kyle Silver had four hits and reached base five times for the Warriors. Loretelli had three hits and scored a run. Seth Hudson had two hits and drove in a pair of runs.

Both starting pitchers battled into the middle innings. Cal State L.A.'s Nathan Pickett worked 5 1/3 innings and gave up nine hits and two earned runs. Cal State Stanislaus got an effective start from Andrew Stueve, who went six innings and gave up nine hits and three runs.

Brian Dearth pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief for Cal State L.A. to get the game into the ninth inning tied, while Eric Federico did the same for Cal State Stanislaus with two scoreless innings.

Cal State L.A. never led in the game, but tied it up on three different occasions. After the Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the second on a run-scoring single by Hudson, the Golden Eagles tied it in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring single by Matzner.

The Warriors took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning when Hudson doubled in a run, took third on a wild throw home and scored on a single by Silver. The Golden Eagles countered in the bottom of the inning when Campos singled, Matzner doubled and Miraldi doubled both runners in.

That's how it stayed until the ninth when the Warriors took a 4-3 lead on a Loratelli double and a run-scoring single by Contreras. The Warriors then turned to Cendejas, who hadn't allowed an earned run all season. That changed when Quiroz hit his first pitch with two outs and no one on to tie the game. Miraldi followed the Quiroz home run with a triple, but was stranded when Brendan McQuaid grounded out to third.

That set the stage for the dramatic 10th inning.

The two teams will conclude the four-games series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Reeder Field beginning at 11 a.m.
