Golden Eagles Rally For 5-4 Tennis Win Over Coyotes

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team did it the hard way, but the Golden Eagles eventually found a way to pull out a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal State San Bernardino.

The Golden Eagles dropped two of the three doubles contests and then stormed back to win four of the six singles matches to claim a 5-4 win over the Coyotes Tuesday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (2-4, 2-3 CCAA) snapped a four-match losing streak with the win. Cal State San Bernardino (1-8, 0-7 CCAA) remained winless in conference play, but battled right to the end in a competitive match.

The win was by the narrowest of margins for the Golden Eagles. First, Cal State L.A.'s No. 1 doubles team of Bojana Ducanovic and Linda Majzlikova had to rally from a 4-0 deficit to win their match in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-3) over the Coyotes' No. 1 team of Leslie Horn and Brittany Choate. That enabled the Golden Eagles to salvage one point in the doubles.

After Cal State L.A.'s Lana Lamesic and Marine Prevost posted straight-set victories at No. 1 and No. 5 singles and Cal State San Bernardino's Kara Jenkins was a straight-set winner at No. 6 singles, the match stood even at 3-3 with three contests still to be decided.

Cal State L.A. ultimately took two of those three contests when Adriana Espinosa rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 win over Lyndsay Haack at No. 2 singles and Majzlikova rebounded for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles over Janay Palicte to decide the match.

As it turned out, the Golden Eagles needed both of those points because of a tremendous rally by Cal State San Bernardino's Dottie Elwell at No. 3 singles. She saved three match points in the second set and then rallied again in the super-tiebreaker to post a 7-6 (3), 5-7, 10-8 victory over Ducanovic.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a non-conference home match against Western New Mexico on Wednesday, March 25.
