LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team came into its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with UC San Diego riding a hot streak, but the Tritons have quickly cooled off the Golden Eagles.
For the second straight day, Cal State L.A. was shut down by UC San Diego's pitching staff and the Golden Eagles dropped a 13-2 decision to the Tritons Friday at Triton Baseball Field. Cal State L.A. (11-6, 4-2 CCAA) had won five straight games entering the series, but has lost the first two games to the Tritons (9-3, 6-0 CCAA) by a combined total of 24-3.
The Golden Eagles, who were limited to four hits and one run on Thursday, did have more opportunities on Friday. Cal State L.A. had nine hits, but were blanked until the eighth inning when pinch hitter
Eric Quintero belted a two-run home run.
UC San Diego, meanwhile, pounded out a season-high 19 hits and broke the game open with a six-run sixth inning. That uprising extended a 3-0 lead to a 9-0 advantage and the Tritons tacked on two runs in each of the seventh and eighth innings to win going away.
John Mitchell (3-1) allowed three runs over his first five innings of work, but he left in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and no one out.
Camron Collard gave up four hits and three runs before getting out of the sixth inning and
Travis McBride and
Brian Dearth gave up two runs each in their one inning of work.
Matt Rossman worked eight strong innings to pick up the win for the Tritons. He allowed nine hits, but walked only one and struck out eight. Elias Tuma worked a scoreless ninth inning to finish up.
UC San Diego leadoff batter Vance Albitz had another big day against the Golden Eagles, going 3-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBI. Evan Kehoe also had a second straight big performance, collecting four hits and driving in four more runs. Tim Mort also had three hits.
Chris Matzner had three hits to lead Cal State L.A., while
Jesus Campos and
Max Moya had two hits each.
UC San Diego scored once in the first on a two-out single by Kehoe and made it 3-0 in the fourth inning with a pair of runs courtesy of a run-scoring singles by Robert Sedin and Nick Burke. The Tritons then broke it open with their six-run sixth inning. Kehoe and Mort had two-run singles to highlight the inning.
Quintero gave the Golden Eagles their only runs when he followed a two-out walk to
Mario Ramirez with his first home run of the season. Albitz countered with a two-run homer to cap his big day in the eighth inning.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its four-game series with UC San Diego with a doubleheader at Reeder Field on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
