LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team fell short in its quest for a second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in as many days.
And there was a good reason for that. The Golden Eagles ran into defending CCAA champion UC San Diego, which won its 50th straight conference match with an 8-1 victory Saturday at the CSULA Tennis Complex. Cal State L.A. (1-1, 1-1) was coming off a win over Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.
UC San Diego (2-1, 2-0 CCAA) swept the three doubles contests and took five of the six singles matches.
Cal State L.A.'s only point came at No. 2 singles, where
Lana Lamesic outlasted Ina Dan. Lamesic was leading, 6-3, 3-1 when Dan had to default due to illness. Cal State L.A.'s
Adriana Espinosa lost in the most competitive match of the day at No. 3 singles when Anita Athavale prevailed, 6-4, 5-7, (11-9).
Cal State L.A.'s No. 1 singles player,
Bojana Ducanovic was beaten by UC San Diego's Natalie Varnay, 6-4, 6-1. Ducanovic and
Linda Majzlikova lost a tight contest at No. 1 doubles to Dan and Taskeen Baines, 8-6.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a match at Cal Poly Pomona beginning at 1:30 p.m.
