OAKLAND -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team returned to action Monday with a non-conference victory that featured balanced scoring, but far too many mistakes.
The Golden Eagles had four players score in double figures in a 77-66 win over NAIA program Holy Names University, but Cal State L.A. once again struggled from the free-throw line and had trouble handling the ball.
The Golden Eagles (3-1) won despite committing 30 turnovers and making only 58 percent of their free throws. Cal State L.A. shot 46 percent from the floor and limited Holy Names (1-12) to just 33 percent shooting.
Chris Fields led the way with 22 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, while
Leland Jones contributed a season-high 17 points and nine rebounds.
Dwayne Jones added 16 points and six rebounds, while
Carl Hoffman had 13 points and nine rebounds.
David Scott had 22 points to lead Holy Names, while Johnas Street had 15 points. Holy Names made just 28 percent of its shots in the second half, but managed to hang around by getting to the free throw line 25 times and making 15.
The Golden Eagles opened up a 41-30 lead by halftime, but they trailed early in the game and were down 16-13 with 11:32 to go in the half. Cal State L.A. went on a 9-0 run, fueled by a basket by
Nuno Furtado, a basket by
Leland Jones, a three-point play by
Dwayne Jones and another basket by
Leland Jones.
The Hawks cut it to two points, 25-23, but the Golden Eagles closed the half on a 16-7 run to extend their lead.
Holy Names made several runs in the second half, the final one to make it 59-57 with 7:03 remaining. Two baskets by Fields and a basket by Hoffman pushed the lead to 65-57 and the Golden Eagles held comfortable edges the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a road game at Dominican before returning home for its 2009-10 home opener on Friday against West Coast Baptist.
