No. 13 Golden Eagles Rally For A 3-2 Victory In Pomona

Box Score

POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team came up with a big second-half rally to maintain its lead in the California Collegiate Athletic Association South Division.

The Golden Eagles got three second-half goals and beat Cal Poly Pomona, 3-2, Sunday in a CCAA contest at Kellogg Field. Cal State L.A. (10-2-1, 7-2-1 CCAA) leads the CCAA South Division by one point over UC San Diego.

Cal State L.A., ranked 13th in the nation, kept the pressure on Cal Poly Pomona (6-6, 2-6 CCAA) for most of the match. The Golden Eagles had a 27-8 advantage in shots and peppered Bronco goalie Ashley Salerno with 18 shots on goal. Salerno made 15 saves, while Cal State L.A. goalie Jessie Walworth made two saves.

The Golden Eagles, trailing 2-0 at halftime, got second-half goals from Ann Marie Tangorra, Alex Conley and Liz Franco to post the victory. Franco's game-winner came in the 79th minute on a penalty kick. Cal State L.A. had a 15-2 shot advantage in the second half.

Kailah Martin gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when she scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Cody McClure. The goal snapped a 346 minute scoreless stretch for the Broncos.

Cal Poly Pomona increased its lead to 2-0 when Carolyn Rubendall knocked in a rebound of a shot by Mary Carroll that hit the post.

The Golden Eagles were unable to convert on any of the 11 corner kicks they had in the first half, but the 12th time was the charm early in the second half. Franco sent a corner kick into the box and Tangorra knocked it past Salerno just 1:24 into the second half for her sixth goal of the season.

Cal State L.A. got the tying goal in the 72nd minute when Conley scored her team-best eighth goal of the season off a pass from Amanda Matthews.

The Golden Eagles then got a penalty kick in the 79th minute after a Cal Poly Pomona foul in the box and Franco didn't miss for her seventh goal of the season.

Cal State L.A. did an outstanding job with the lead and held Cal Poly Pomona without a shot the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a road match at Humboldt State.
