LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's
Oliver Diaz has been named the Pixellot/CCAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 9-15, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Diaz had goals in both games last week and led the Golden Eagles to a pair of shutout wins and into sole possession of first place in the conference. Cal State LA (10-1-1, 5-1 CCAA) now has 10 or more wins in 12 consecutive seasons and climbed back into the top-10 in the United Soccer Coaches national poll.
Diaz, a senior defender/midfielder from Hawthorne, knocked in a free kick from
Steve Perez to account for the lone goal in a 1-0 win at No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday. On Sunday, he converted on a penalty kick in the first half of a 5-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino to extend his goal-scoring streak to three matches.
As a key part of the Cal State LA defense, Diaz has helped the Golden Eagles record four consecutive shutouts (and five shutouts in the last six matches). In fact, Cal State LA has only allowed a CCAA-best four goals in 12 matches this season and has nine shutouts.
Diaz, the CCAA Newcomer of the Year in 2022, is second on the team in goals scored with four and he now has a total of 10 goals in 31 games in his Cal State LA career.
He becomes the third Cal State LA player to earn weekly honors this season. Previously,
Julian Aadlandsvik was named CCAA Defensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 4-10 and
Bryan Ortega was named the CCAA Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 11-17.
No. 8 Cal State LA hosts No. 3 Chico State (10-0-3, 3-0-3 CCAA) Friday night at 7 p.m. in a battle of top-10 teams and welcomes Stanislaus State (3-8-2) on Sunday on Senior Day.
