Summary

Biography

2024: Competed for Cal State LA’s track and field team in the spring. Had best marks of 53.60 in the 400 and 2:04.10 in the 800. Earned 2024 California Collegiate Athletic Association Spring Academic Honor Roll recognition. Also competed for Cal State LA’s cross country team in the fall. Ran in one race and had a time of 29:16.85 at the Seawolf Invitational over a 4-mile course.

2023: Competed in two meets for Cal State LA’s cross country team in the fall. Had a best 8,000-meter time of 31:38.6 while finishing 80th in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships on Oct. 21. Also ran at the Coyote Challenge in his debut for Cal State LA on Sept. 9.

At Cerritos College: Competed in cross country and track and field. Had best times of 53.85 in the 400 and 2:05.17 in the 800 in 2023. Had a best time of 24.22 in the 200 in 2022.

At Whittier High School: Competed in track and field. Won the league 400 meter title and earned first-team All-League honors. Also advanced to CIF in the 400 meters.

Personal: Son of John Covarrubias and Belinda Vargas. Majoring in sociology. Enjoys running, lifting, and playing basketball. Lists going to CIF in the 400 meters without a sprints coach as his most exciting experience in sports. Says it was nerve-wracking since he didn’t have a coach to prepare him mentally. Notes throughout injuries and backtracks, resilience has been a big factor towards his journey to be better.
