Golden Eagles Drop Series Opener To Warriors

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team fell behind early and never could catch up in a California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener against Stanislaus State.

The Warriors got a grand slam home run from Bradley Morris in the second inning and made it stand up in a 6-3 win over the Golden Eagles Friday at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (12-10, 2-3 CCAA) pulled to within 4-3 in the seventh inning, but the Warriors added two runs in the eighth and held on for the victory.

Alejandro Huezo was outstanding over seven strong innings, but ran into trouble in the second and gave up a leadoff single, a one-out double before hitting a batter on a 1-2 pitch to load the bases. Morris homered on the next pitch to give the Warriors a 4-1 lead. Huezo rebounded nicely and tossed five scoreless innings before allowing the first of two runs in the eighth. He didn't walk a batter and struck out four.

Austin Balentine pitched six effective innings for Stanislaus State (12-10, 3-2 CCAA) to improve to 5-1 on the season. He allowed seven hits and only earned run. Jared Sawyer, Eli Burton and Pierce Sailer finished the game for the Warriors with Sailer coming on to get the final out of the eighth inning with two runners on base and then striking out the side in the ninth.

Omar Gonzalez hit his conference-leading ninth home run for the Golden Eagles in the sixth inning to pull Cal State LA to within 4-2. Ben Lee went 4-for-4 and Carson Panarisi drove in a run.

Jake Spence pitched the final two innings for the Golden Eagles and gave up an unearned run and one hit.
