LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams took their last - and very last - chances for NCAA Division II National Championship qualification at a pair of meets this weekend.
The Golden Eagles hosted their own Cal State LA Very Last Chance Meet on Sunday on the heels of the Azusa Pacific's Franson Last Chance Meet and several top performances were turned in over the three days of competition.
Sunday's meet was marked the final home race run by one of the best sprinters in program history,
Leon Tafirenyika, who was making a return from injury and trying to improve upon his qualifying mark in the 100 meters. Tafirenyika, whose season's best time of 10.21 is not guaranteed to make the championship field, finished second in 10.56 on Sunday.
Tafirenyika, who has a total of 11 California Collegiate Athletic Associaton championships and six All-America awards, missed last week's CCAA Championships due to injury.
Teammate
Drew Hill, who won the CCAA 100-meter title in Turlock last week and finished third in the 200, was busy this weekend. He ran a season's best of 10.32 in three separate heats at Azusa Pacific and finished Sunday at Cal State LA with a time of 10.57. He was second in the finals at APU on Saturday.
Jahbari Fraser ran a season's best mark of 10.44 while qualifying for the 100 finals at APU, where he finished sixth.
CCAA champion
Matthew Bender was sixth in the javelin throw at APU on Friday.
On Sunday, Cal State LA's
Nicholas Aninze won the 400 hurdles in 54.50 to lead a 1-2-3 finish that included
Gabriel Pearson and
Joshua Pearson,
Trent Osburn won the 1,500 in 4:28.05, just ahead of second-place finisher
Nicholas Delgado in 4:30.06 and
David Rush won the 5,000 with a time of 17:30.01.
For the women,
Ski'lar Wallace led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 that included teammates
Sydney Holmes and
Alyssa Polk,
Dalia Romo was second in the 400 hurdles in 63.20,
Nelly Garnica was third in the 1.500 and
Emmerson Wiggins was fourth in the 200.
Sinaiah Pointer was third in the shot put at APU.
