AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team battled admirably on Wednesday in its 2025 season opener at No. 21 Azusa Pacific.
The Golden Eagles picked up a win at No. 4 singles from
Sarah Olmos in a 6-1 loss to the Cougars at the Cougar Tennis Complex. Olmos, who had a strong showing in the ITA Fall Regionals, started the spring dual match season with an impressive 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 win over Katherine Nguyen.
The Golden Eagles dropped the doubles point to Azusa Pacific despite a good performance from the No. 3 doubles team of
Courtlyn Lam and
Lea Rolland. Lam and Rolland held a 5-4 lead over Nguyen and Tina Moser when the point was clinched.
Olmos and
Hideka Takamura fell at No. 1 doubles, 6-1, to Julia Jordan and Vini Bautista, while newcomers
Sofia Pavlova and
Maldini Simic fell at No. 2 doubles to Karola Suviste and Stina Larsson.
Pavlova, a newcomer from Academy of Art, fell in a brilliant battle at No. 1 singles to Bautista, who claimed a 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 decision.
Simic fell at No. 2 singles to Jordan, 6-1, 6-4, Takamura fell at No. 3 singles to Nguyen, 6-2, 6-0, Rolland fell at No. 5 singles to Suviste, and
Summer Roybal fell at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0, to Tina Moser.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a match at Westmont before the Golden Eagles' home opener on Saturday against Jessup at 2 p.m.
