FULLERTON -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a rough day Saturday in a doubleheader against Regis.
The Golden Eagles dropped both ends of the doubleheader to the Rangers, 9-1, and 7-3, at Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Stadium. Cal State LA (3-6) was limited to five hits and one run in the opener and three runs and eight hits in the nightcap by Regis (7-7). The Rangers collected 15 hits in the opener and had 28 hits in the doubleheader.
Malik Clayton had a pair of hits in the opener, while
Carson Panarisi drove in the lone run.
Isaiah Marquez and
Ben Lee had sacrifice flies in the nightcap and
Cesar Chavez had a pair of hits, a run scored and one RBI in the nightcap.
AJ Moreno started in the opener for the Golden Eagles and surrendered five hits and two runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Moises Escobedo was charged with four runs over 1 1/3 innings,
Jace Paderez gave up two hits and two unearned runs in one inning,
Anthony Lopez tossed a scoreless eighth inning and
Jonathan Manuel gave up two hits and one run in the ninth.
Cal State LA got a run in the second inning on a groundout by Panarisi and trailed just 2-1 after five innings, but Regis got home runs from Clay Conn, Adam Paniagua and Zach Barnao in a four-run sixth inning to break the game open.
In the nightcap, Cal State LA got a sacrifice fly by Marquez in the third inning and Lee in the fourth, but Ayden Harrison homered to lead off a three-run fifth inning for the Rangers. Regis added a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to take a 7-2 lead.
Chavez singled in Clayton in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-3.
Brandon Gutierrez got the start and pitched well, allowing seven hits and three earned runs with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Joel Martinez gave up three hits and a run in one inning and
Jared Robles finished up on the mound, allowing two runs in the seventh.
Cal State LA and Regis will conclude the series on Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m.
