LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team put up quite a battle Thursday night against No. 2 Cal Poly Pomona, but the effort didn't result in a victory.
The Golden Eagles pulled to within a goal after a late score from
Carisia Raygoza, but the unbeaten Broncos held on for a 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in University Stadium. Cal State LA (6-2-3, 3-2 CCAA) dropped its second straight one-goal decision, while the Broncos (11-0-1, 4-0-1 CCAA) remained unbeaten in the battle between the top two teams in the conference standings.Â
Cal Poly Pomona now has a four-point edge over the Golden Eagles with the result on Thursday.
The Broncos broke a scoreless tie in the 43rd minute off a corner kick. The corner kick was taken by Jaclyn Cuevas and first touched by Angelina Rivas. She got the ball to Liberty Ortiz, who fired in a shot from point-blank range for her second goal of the season.
After the Golden Eagles got a pair of prime scoring opportunities from
Destiny Moedano and
Jassmin Ortiz in the first six minutes of the second half, Cal Poly Pomona took a 2-0 lead in the 69th minute. Vanessa Cruz sent a pass toward the top of the box, where Tara Oper was able to fire in a free shot after a defender slipped. The goal was Oper's fourth of the season.
Cal State LA, though, kept the pressure up and was rewarded with a goal in the 80th minute to slice the deficit in half. Raygoza scored the first goal of her Cal State LA career when she headed in a nice pass from
Andrea Hernandez from right in front of the goal to make it 2-1. The assist was the second of the season for Hernandez.
Neither team was able to get a shot over the final 10 minutes and the Broncos took the hard-fought win.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 12-9 edge in shots, while Cal State LA had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Both goalkeepers - Cal State LA's
Taesja Paopao and Cal Poly Pomona's Bella Hara - had four saves.
Liliana Gonzalez and Moedano had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with a road match at Cal State San Bernardino.
