Golden Eagles Unable To Overcome Early Deficit

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team had a big edge in shots, but was unable to overcome an early deficit in a frustrating 1-0 loss at Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles surrendered a goal in the 10th minute and fought an uphill battle the rest of the way in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Premier Field. Cal State LA (6-3-3, 3-3 CCAA) dropped its third straight one-goal decision and slipped into a tie for fourth place with nine points in a tightly-contested conference race. Cal State San Bernardino (4-3-5, 3-1-2 CCAA) jumped into second place in the conference with 11 points.

Cal State LA had a 16-7 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 margin in the second half as the Golden Eagles tried to notch the equalizer. The Golden Eagles had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks, including a 6-1 edge in the second half.

The Golden Eagles started slowly, allowing a shot just two minutes into the game that was saved by Taesja Paopao and then a goal in the 10th minute when Bella Cervantes scored her fifth of the season with an assist by Alissa Torres.

Cal State LA got a match-high three shots from Jaclyn Orozco and two shots each from Liliana Gonzalez, Destiny Moedano, Jassmin Ortiz, Presli Dillon and Peytyn Mize.

Paopao had three saves in the contest, while Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Leila Peregrina made four saves for the Coyotes.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal State East Bay.
