SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams enjoyed tremendous success Saturday on the third and final day of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships.
Leon Tafirenyika won two individual championships in the 200 and 400 meters and anchored two CCAA championship relay teams to lead the way. Tafirenyika, who won conference titles in the 400 and both relays last year, upped his career conference championship total to seven.
He was named the CCAA Track Athlete of the Meet for his performance on Saturday at Cal State San Marcos' Mangrum Track & Field.Â
Cal State LA picked up a second big award when
Qwintin Workman was named the CCAA Newcomer of the Meet after finishing a close second in the 400 hurdles and being a major part of the 4x400 relay win.
The most exciting win of the day came in the 4x400 relay where Cal State LA broke a meet record with a winning time of 3:09.24, which is No. 5 all-time at Cal State LA and the fastest time since 1983. The mark also moved the Golden Eagles up to No. 6 in the nation. Turner and Nichol II got the Golden Eagles off to a strong start and the race really turned down the final stretch of Workman's leg when he closed the gap between the Golden Eagles and first-place Cal Poly Pomona. The Cal State LA exchange was much smoother than the Broncos and Tafirenyika immediately raced out to a healthy lead. That lead was narrowed heading into the final turn, but Tafirenyika had plenty left in the tank to win going away and pushing the Golden Eagles to the record-setting time.
The first win came in the 4x100 relay when
Shawn Simms,
Darnelle Harris,
Phillip McElroy II and Tafirenyika set a new season's best of 40.50. That mark is tied for No. 7 all-time at Cal State LA. Tafirenyika had a tremendous final leg, running down his counterpart from Cal Poly Pomona for a razor-thin win.
Tafirenyika was in complete command while winning his second straight 400 title, posting a time of 46.71, which was just off his season's best of 46.45 that is No. 5 all-time at Cal State LA and No. 5 in the country.
Tafirenyika also captured the 200 title, leading three Golden Eagles across the line. His time of 20.65 is a season's best and No. 5 all-time at Cal State LA and No. 6 in the nation. Harris had a strong outing, finishing fourth in 21.31 and Simms was seventh in 21.70.
Cal State LA also had three runners earn points in the 100, led by a second-place finish by Harris, who posted a provisional qualifying mark with a time of 10.51. Simms was sixth in 10.81 and
Martin Zarzuela was eighth in 10.97.
Cal State LA also picked up a point in the triple jump from
Lam Nguyen, who was eighth with a mark of 42-5.25.
The Cal State LA women's team picked up points in the 4x100 relay when
Eden Hahn,
Alyssa Johnson,
Aazalet Danage and
Isis Johnson finished fifth in 48.31. Hahn was also ninth in the 100 in 12.24 and
Riyanna Jackson was ninth in the javelin with a mark of 116-3.
Cal State LA's men finished fourth overall with 95 points, just 4.5 points back of third-place Cal State San Marcos. Cal Poly Pomona won its second straight title. The Broncos also won their second straight women's title, edging Chico State, 191-185.5. The Golden Eagles were 11th overall.
