LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team celebrated Senior Day on Sunday and then battled competitively before ultimately coming up short to California Collegiate Athletic Association leader Cal State Monterey Bay.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings, but Cal State Monterey Bay roared back to take a 14-8 decision in the final game of a four-game series at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (17-28, 12-24 CCAA) won the opener on Friday, but Cal State Monterey Bay (31-13, 28-8 CCAA) came back to win the final three to take the series.Â
Johnny Pacheco went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored to lead a 13-hit attack for the Golden Eagles.
Fabian Moran collected two more doubles as part of a 2-for-4 day at the plate and Anthony Angel Jr. went 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI and slugged his fifth home run of the season.
Matthew Piotrowski went 2-for-4 with two RBI and raised his batting average to .388, while
Nick Atkins went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Drew Williams went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI for the Otters, including his team-leading 12th home run of the series. Cole Murchison and Jacob Dressler had three hits each for the Otters, who had 17 hits in the game.
Eric Navarrete went 4 1/3 innings for the Golden Eagles and carried the 4-1 advantage into the fourth.
Joel Martinez went the next 3 2/3 innings and
Trevor Baugh and
Jacob Rangel worked the ninth inning.
After Williams staked the Otters to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Golden Eagles bunched together four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning. Pacheco doubled to right to lead off for the Golden Eagles and promptly scored on a run-scoring single from
Drew Emmons. Piotrowski doubled to right to drive in Emmons to make it 2-1, Moran followed with a two-out double to drive in Piotrowski and Angel Jr. singled in Moran to make it 4-1.
The Golden Eagles made it 5-1 in the second when Emmons walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Piotrowski. Atkins delivered a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the third to make it 6-1.
A dropped pop up and a fielding error in the outfield led to three Cal State Monterey Bay runs in the fourth that made it 6-4 and Pacheco doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Michael Rosales in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-4.
The Otters took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth and added one run in the sixth, one in the eighth and four in the ninth. Angel Jr. belted a solo in the ninth inning to complete the scoring.
