LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team came up just short Monday against Biola on a windy day at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex.
The Golden Eagles earned the doubles point, but managed only one win in the six singles contests and fell to the Eagles, 5-2. Cal State LA (3-12) and Biola (5-8) had quite a battle in the singles, with the visitors taking all three contests that went to a third set.
Cal State LA got off to great start in doubles.
Courtlyn Lam and
Savaughna Mayo beat Alexandra Mann and Julia Vartuli at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, and
Hideka Takamura and
Alexandra Hincu beat Lilly McNeill and Gaby Carvajal at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, to clinch the point.
Sarah Olmos and
Sakura Kurokawa also played well and had a 5-2 lead at No. 1 doubles over Colbeyshae Emery and Brooke Fager when the doubles point was clinched.
Cal State LA picked up its lone singles point courtesy of Mayo's excellent 6-0, 6-0 victory over Vartuli.
Cal State LA dropped three of the singles matches in three sets. Olmos won the first set against Emery at No. 1 singles before Biola's top player rallied for a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 decision. Takamura fought back to force a third set before falling to Fager at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 and Hincu forced a third set as well before falling to Mann, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Kurokawa fell to McNeill, 7-5, 6-1, at No. 2 singles and Lam fell to Carvajal at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Cal State LA will return to action on Wednesay against Azusa Pacific on Senior Day. The Golden Eagles will honor their lone senior,
Savaughna Mayo, in prematch ceremonies.
