OJAI -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team got its 2023 season off to a good start with a 5-2 win over Westmont College.
The Golden Eagles earned the doubles point and then took four of six singles contests to earn the victory at the Well Academy. Cal State LA (1-0) earned two big singles points via three-set wins at No. 3 singles from
Alexandra Hincu and No. 6 singles from
Savaughna Mayo.
Cal State LA took the lead after winning two of the three doubles sets.
Sarah Olmos and Sakura Kurakawa won at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, over Arden Samuels and Liska Knight and Hincu and Hidecka Takamura clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Francesca Aguiire and Sophia Ostovany at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Kurakawa was victorious at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 6-0, over Ostovany, Hincu edged Samuels, 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Takamura beat Sabina Salva at No. 4 singles and Mayo prevailed in a tight match with Knight at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Olmos fell to Aguirre at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1 and
Courtlyn Lam dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Justie Spitzer, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
Cal State LA will return to action with a match at Biola on Monday at 2 p.m.Â
