LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team bounced back nicely from an opening-game setback to earn a doubleheader split with The Master's University on Friday.
After dropping the first game by a 9-1 decision, the Golden Eagles got a big game at the plate from
Fabian Moran and a strong start from
Joel Martinez to take the nightcap, 8-4, at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (2-1) was limited to just four hits in the opener, but Moran led an eight-hit attack in the nightcap. Moran went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in, including a go-ahead two-run home run in the second inning. He later added a two-run single in the fourth to stake the Golden Eagles to an 8-1 lead.
Martinez allowed only three hits and one run over four innings to pick up the win in the seven-inning nightcap. He walked two and struck out five. Deandre Carter pitched the next two innings for the Golden Eagles and
Kai Penuelas retired the side in order in the seventh to close things out.
Matthew Piotrowski went 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI and Anthony Angel Jr. also had a pair of hits.
Moran followed a walk to
Michael Rosales with a booming shot over the left-field fence in the bottom of the second inning for the first home run of his Cal State LA career. The Golden Eagles added a pair of unearned run later in the inning to take a 4-0 lead.
After the Mustangs (4-1) got a run in the top of the third, Cal State LA countered with a double from Moran and a run-scoring single from
Adam Axtell to make it 5-1.
Cal State LA extended the lead to 8-1 in the fourth, with all three runs coming after two were out.
Johnny Pacheco and
Wilem Drozdowski drew two-out walks and Piotrowski doubled in Pacheco to make it 6-1. Moran then delivered a sharp two-run single up the middle to complete the scoring.
In the opener, Cal State LA managed only three hits and one run in six innings against The Master's starter Ian Mortensen. Will Batz and Ty Beck each drove in three runs for the Mustangs.
The Golden Eagles' only run came via a solo home run from Penuelas in the sixth inning.
Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday with the opener of a two-game series against Montana State Billings.Â
