CCAA Winter Honor Roll
LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA had five student-athletes from its men's and women's basketball teams honored for their work in the classroom as members of the 2021-22 California Collegiate Athletic Association Winter Academic Honor Roll, the conference announced on Wednesday.
A total of 88 student-athletes were honored among the 12 conference schools.
The seasonal awards were instituted in 2014 and the Winter Academic Honor Roll was previously named the Winter All-Academic Team until this year.
Honor Roll distinction is given to student-athletes who are a sophomore or above in academic standing with a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.3 while competing in a conference-sponsored sport. Graduate students are eligible for the Honor Roll.
Alexander Sokol of men's basketball and
Briana Anugwom,
Alyssa Fisher,
Nicole Flennaugh and
Jada Johnson of women's basketball were the Cal State LA student-athletes who were honored.
Sokol has been an exceptional student and player since joining the Cal State LA men's basketball program. He earned CCAA Honor Roll distinction for a second straight season after leading the Golden Eagles in scoring in 2021-22. He earned All-CCAA honorable mention after placing sixth in the conference in scoring with 15.3 points per game. He also set a new program record with nine 3-pointers in a season-ending win at Sonoma State. He had 68 successful 3-pointers for the season, which is No. 4 all-time at Cal State LA.
Anugwom battled through injuries in 2021-22, but was able to play some effective minutes for the Golden Eagles in the CCAA Tournament. She joined Cal State LA out of UC Santa Barbara, where she majored in psychology.
Fisher, who graduated from Cal State LA with a degree in psychology, had a strong final season for the Golden Eagles in 2021-22 and led the team with 4.1 assists per game.
Flennaugh, who graduated in the spring, majored in television, film and media studies. Flennaugh received first-team All-CCAA honors in 2021-22 and led the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game. She led the CCAA and was eighth nationally with 89 successful 3-pointers, which tied the program single-season record. She also set a new mark with nine 3-pointers in a game.
Johnson also graduated in the spring with a degree in communications. She earned All-CCAA second-team honors after a sensational first season on the court with the Golden Eagles. She led the conference in rebounding with 10.2 boards per game and she was also fourth on the team in scoring with 8.2 points per contest.
The CCAA recognizes individuals academically each season – fall, winter and spring – for all conference-sponsored sports. The CCAA will release its Spring Honor Roll later this week and also has full-year CCAA All-Academic Awards that will be announced later this summer.
