LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team has suddenly gotten the hang of last-second victories.
Five days after the Golden Eagles won a game thanks to three free throws from
Khemanni Davis with one second left at Stanislaus State,
Isaiah Fields buried a game-winning 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left to give the Golden Eagles a thrilling 69-68 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State San Bernardino Thursday night in University Gym. Cal State LA (9-18, 8-13 CCAA) completed a rare season-sweep against the perennial CCAA contenders.
Fields' heroics came at the end of an outstanding game that saw him score a game-high 21 points with great efficiency. Fields hit 8-of-9 from the floor, including all three of his 3-point attempts. Davis also reached double figures with 10 points and six rebounds.
Zion Paleo had a team-high 17 points for Cal State San Bernardino (14-14, 11-10 CCAA), which slipped into a four-way tie for fourth place in the CCAA with one game remaining. Xavier Clinton and Gavin Davis had 10 points each.
Donovan Vickers had nine points for the Golden Eagles, while
Michael Pearson Jr. had eight points and four assists and
Damarion Pouncil had six points, nine rebounds and six blocks.
Cal State LA shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) and was 7-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 12-of-15 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino shot 38.2 percent (26-of-68) and was 6-of-27 from 3-point range. The Coyotes were 10-of-13 from the free-throw line. Cal State San Bernardino had a 42-33 rebounding edge and both teams committed 10 turnovers.
The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start and held early leads of 6-0 and 8-2. Cal State San Bernardino took a three-point lead late in the half before a 3-pointer by Pearson Jr. tied it at 36-36. The Coyotes hit a free throw with one second left to take a 36-35 halftime lead.
The second half was close throughout with neither team able to take more than a three-point lead. A 3-pointer by Pearson Jr. gave the Golden Eagles a 58-55 lead with 8:21 remaining and a layup by Fields put them ahead, 60-57, with 5:37 remaining. Cal State San Bernardino took a 68-65 lead after a pair of free throws by Aidan Fowler with 1:17 left, but Cal State LA got a free throw from Pouncil to make it 68-66 with 1:05 to go. The Coyotes missed a pair of shots to extend their lead and Pouncil grabbed the second miss with 15 seconds left. After a Cal State LA timeout, Fields got the ball with time running out and hit his game-winner.
Cal State LA will conclude its 2026 season on Saturday at 3 p.m. with a game on Senior Day against Cal Poly Pomona.
