Golden Eagles Set The Stage For A Big Final Day

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's track and field team put itself in good position after a strong showing in prelims Friday on Day 2 of the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships at San Francisco State's Cox Stadium.

The Golden Eagles are competing this week with heavy hearts after the passing of popular volunteer assistant coach Darrell Augusta. Head coach Tina Fernandes said the Golden Eagles are dedicating the meet to Augusta and his family.

Shingirai Hlanguyo and Leon Tafirenyika both qualified with the fastest times in the 100 and 400 meters, while Hlanguyo came back and turned in the third-fastest qualifying time in the 200. Xavier Williams also qualified in a pair of events for the Golden Eagles after making the championship field in both hurdles races, while Darnelle Harris qualified in the 100 and 200 to give Cal State LA two prime contenders in the sprints. Anthony Richardson gave the Golden Eagles a third qualifier in the 100 after finishing sixth in the prelims with a time of 10.89.

Hlanguyo was first in the 100 with a time of 10.55 and third in the 200 with a time of 21.68. Tafirenyika was the fastest qualifier in the 400 with a time of 48.28, while Clifton Johnson was eighth in 50.04.

Harris was fourth in the 100 with a time of 10.69 and fourth in the 200 with a time of 21.86.

Williams was fourth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 14.76 and sixth in the 400 hurdles in 55.62.

The top eight qualifiers in the prelims advanced to the finals, while the top three will earn All-CCAA recognition.

In a field event final on Friday, Jalon Stanley matched his best mark of the season in the long jump while finishing fourth with a leap of 21-2.75. That earned the Golden Eagles six points in the team competition.
