LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team put up a good battle Wednesday against Azusa Pacific, but couldn't pull out a victory.
The Golden Eagles dropped the doubles point and won a pair of singles contests in a 5-2 loss to the Cougars at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (4-7) earned the doubles point in the first meeting against Azusa Pacific (14-6), but that result was reversed in the rematch.
Cal State LA picked up a pair of singles points from
Berta Acero and
Chelsey Ruiz on a hot and sunny day on the courts. Two of the six singles matches were not completed due to retirement.
Acero won her sixth straight match at No. 4 singles with all wins coming in straight sets. She was leading Azusa Pacific's Carolyn Brooner, 6-3, 4-2 when Brooner retired in the second set.
Ruiz, meanwhile, earned a well-played 6-1, 6-3 victory over Audrey Stewart at No. 5 singles. Ruiz has now won two of her last three singles contests.
Sarah Olmos had a close contest at No. 2 singles before falling to Madison Kane, 6-3, 7-5.
Noa Davico lost to Nora Liga of Azusa Pacific, the No. 5-ranked player in the nation, 6-0, 6-2,
Sakura Kurokawa had to retire in the second set of her match at No. 3 singles against April Wong and
Courtlyn Lam fell to Katherine Nguyen of Azusa Pacific at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles, Davico and Kurokawa fell at No. 2 doubles to Stewart and Wong, 6-1, and Lam and
Savaughna Mayo fell to Nguyen and Brooner at No. 3 doubles, 6-2. The other doubles match was called when the point was clinched.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home match against Hope International at 1:30 p.m.
