ROHNERT PARK -- Cal State LA's baseball team came up short Sunday in its bid to salvage a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Sonoma State.
The Seawolves broke a 2-2 tie with six runs in the seventh inning and went on to an 8-2 victory over the Golden Eagles at Seawolf Diamond. Cal State LA (15-27, 10-22 CCAA), after winnign the opener of Saturday's doubleheader to even the series, dropped the final two games of the series to Sonoma State (19-22, 16-16 CCAA).
Will Picketts had a pair of hits, while
Wilem Drozdowski and
Anthony Angel, Jr. drove in runs for the Golden Eagles.
Micah Hee had another strong start for the Golden Eagles, allowing only four hits and one unearned run over six outstanding innings. He walked two and struck out four.
Sonoma State starter Blake Janowicz allowed only four hits and one run over six innings, while Tanner Fonoti allowed only two hits and an unearned run over the final three innings to pick up the win.Â
Otis Statum hit a tiebreaking solo home run in the seventh to get things rolling for the Seawolves in their game-deciding six-run rally.
Cal State LA bunched together singles from Angel,
Nick Atkins and Drozdowski to take a 1-0 lead in the third with Drozdowski picking up a clutch two-out hit to drive in Angel.
Sonoma State, though, countered with an unearned run in the fourth and then took a 2-1 lead with a run in the sixth.
Cal State LA tied it in the top of the seventh.
Gerardo Castaneda drew a leadoff walk and
Thomas Chavez reached on an error. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Angel drove in Castaneda with a groundout to make it 2-2.
Sonoma State then took command with its six-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, a rally aided by two Cal State LA errors that led to three unearned runs.
Cal State LA will play its final four games at home with a series against Cal Poly Pomona beginning on Friday at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles will hold Senior Day on Sunday.
