Golden Eagles End Season With An Exciting Win

SURPRISE, ARIZ. -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team finished its 2022 season with an exciting win over Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday in the seventh-place match at the PacWest Conference Championships.

The Golden Eagles prevailed by a thin margin for the doubles point and then picked up a clutch three-set win at No. 2 singles from Noa Davico to clinch a 4-2 win over the Vulcans. Cal State LA (8-10) split its four matches over four days at the conference tournament with the hard-fought win over Hawaii-Hilo (6-11).

Davico also had a hand in Cal State LA picking up the big doubles point. She and partner Sakura Kurokawa posted a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Hannah Highsmith and Casydee De Mattos and the Golden Eagles won the point after a 7-6 win at No. 1 doubles with Berta Acero and Sarah Olmos edging Julia Barden and Nanami Okamoto. The tiebreaker went to Cal State LA, 7-3.

The Vulcans won the first two singles matches off the court to briefly take a 2-1 lead, but Olmos finished off a nice 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Carolina Alfonsin to get the match even and Chelsey Ruiz recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5 singles over Okamoto. Davico then clinched the match with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Sandra Dafinmcescu.

Acero was even in her match after splitting the first two sets against Barden, 5-7, 6-4, when the match was clinched.

It was the final match for Cal State LA seniors Berta Acero, Noa Davico and Chelsey Ruiz and it was fitting that all three played big roles in Cal State LA's season-ending win.
