RIVERSIDE -- Cal State LA's men's track and field team got another outstanding effort from Leon Tafirenyika to highlight the evening's events at the Chris Rinne Twilight Meet at UC Riverside.

Tafirenyika, the reigning California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Track Athlete of the Week, improved his NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the 400 meters on Friday in the Golden Eagles' final tuneup before the conference championships. Tafirenyika finished fourth with a new season's best of 47.13. His previous best of 47.24 was ninth in the country heading into the weekend.

The Golden Eagles also got good performances from their relay teams. The 4x400 relay team of Tafirenyika, Shingirai Hlanguyo, Clifton Johnson and Jesus Nichol II won its race with a time of 3:16.98 and the 4x100 relay team finished second with a time of 41.28.

Hlanguyo posted strong times in the 100 and 200 meters and finished just a bit higher than his season's best marks in both events. He was second in the 200 with a time of 21.48 and eighth in the 100 in 10.73. Hlanguyo has posted a provisional qualifying mark in the 100 and is just above the standard in the 200.

Nichol II had another strong race in the 800 and finished third with a time of 1:53.66, while Timothy Mates was fourth in the 400 hurdles with a time of 57.12 and ninth in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 15.23.

Ajay Harrison was sixth in the hammer with a mark of 153-3 and 13th in the discus with a mark of 129-3.
