AZUSA -- Cal State LA's women's track and field team had some strong performances on Saturday at the Franson Classic hosted by Azusa Pacific.
Mya Ferguson,
Ja'Narie Rhambo and the 4x100 relay team recorded third-place finishes to highlight the day for the Golden Eagles.Â
"Today was a beautiful day for our Golden Eagles, head coach
Tina Fernandes said. "We had multiple season's bests and a few personal best performances. We are continuing to get stronger and faster. It's going to be nice to see how our season progresses.
Ferguson finished third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 63.66 and was third as part of the 4x100 relay team that was third in 47.98. Ferguson was joined on the relay by
Sanaia Woods,
Dericka Braden and
Aazalet Danage.
Ferguson was also fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.59.
Rhambo was third in the hammer throw with a mark of 131-8, while
Imani McGee was fourth in the shot put with a season's best mark of 41-8.75.
Pamela Grissom was sixth in the shot put with a mark of 40-4.
"I'm blessed to have this opportunity. Now it's time to work," McGee said.
Woods had a sixth-place finish in the 400 with a season's best time of 58.29, while Braden was ninth in a season's best time of 58.95.
"I think we are all doing well. I'm dropping times every week," Braden said. "I'm just reminding myself that you can't rush the process and that a step forward no matter how small is a step in the right direction."
Javany McDermott had three top-10 finishes after placing seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 37-2.25, ninth in the high jump with a mark of 5-1 and ninth in the long jump with a mark of 17-6.25.
"Today's meet had its ups and downs," McDermott said. "I performed better in the high jump and PRd in the long jump again. I wasn't able to have a fulfilling day in the triple jump. Either way, I love the direction I am headed."
"This weekend's performances were exciting! I'm very happy with the efforts that I saw," Cal State LA assistant coach
Erica Cosby said. "I'm excited and eager to see the growth and fight developing in the team!"
Cal State LA will return to action next weekend with a pair of events at UCLA on Friday and Saturday.
