NORWALK -- Cal State LA's women's track and field team kicked off its 2022 outdoor season Saturday with a strong showing at the Cerritos Invitational.
Cal State LA won six individual events to highlight the day at the Cerritos Invitational.
Javany McDermott won two events and had top-three finishes in two others for the Golden Eagles.
Sanaia Woods,
Dericka Braden,
Mya Ferguson and
Ja'Narie Rhambo also won events for the Golden Eagles.
McDermott won the high jump with a mark of 5-3 and also captured the triple jump with a mark of 37-11.50. She was also third in the 100 with a time of 13.16 and second in the long jump with a mark of 16-6.
Woods won the 100 with a time of 12.54 and also took third in the 200 with a time of 25.76 and third in the long jump with a mark of 16-3.
"I feel like today was a good opener as a freshman at my first college outdoor meet," Woods said. "It was exciting seeing all my teammates compete and many PR's in their own events."
Braden captured the 800 with a time of 2:29.20 and Ferguson won the 100 hurdles with a time of 14.97.
"I think this week's performance set the tone for the outdoor season," Braden said. "I did really well in an event that is not even my main event so I'm really proud. I am also proud of the team and the way they performed. I know that we are ready to show up and show out next week at home."
Rhambo won the shot put with a mark of 37-2.50, while
Pamela Grissom took second with a mark of 36-2.
Jordyn Wyatt placed second in the discus with a mark of 117-7.
"This meet was a great start to what will be a beautiful outdoor season!" Rhambo said. "I'm excited to be back and I'm so happy for the home meet next week!"
Said head coach
Tina Fernandes: "We had no expectation going in because almost everyone had not competed between two to three years or it was their first collegiate meet. We love competing at Cerritos because it is fast and the meet is always well run. We wanted our team to feel at home and just go out to get a feel of competing again. I thought we had a good start and great promise for the future. The team is hungry to get back to work, but the key is for everyone to stay healthy. We will do amazing things this season if we're healthy."
Cal State LA will return to action next weekend when the Golden Eagles host the Cal State LA Invitational. Throwing events will be held on Friday at Mt. SAC and the main portion of the meet will be held at Cal State LA on Saturday.
