LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's baseball team bounced back nicely from a series-opening loss on Thursday with an impressive performance on Friday.
The Golden Eagles unleashed a 14-hit atttack to back six outstanding innings on the mound from
Owen Hunt in a 10-2 victory over Biola at Eagles Diamond. Cal State LA (4-4) trailed 2-1 after five innings, but scored nine runs over the next three innings to turn things around.
Hunt, after allowing a two-run home run in the third inning, didn't allow a run over his last five innings of work. He allowed only three hits, while walking three and striking out nine.
Christian Longoria pitched two scoreless innings to start the game for Cal State LA and
Yuji Sakane pitched a scoreless ninth to end it.
Eight Cal State LA batters collected hits in the game, led by
Wilem Drozdowski, who went 3-for-4.
A.J. Salgado had another multi-hit game for the Golden Eagles, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Johnny Pacheco,
Will Picketts and
Drew Emmons also had two hits each, while
Nick Atkins had one hit with two runs scored and two RBI. Emmons had two RBI.
The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Atkins scored on a wild pitch, but Biola responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run from Oscar Serratos.Â
It stayed a 2-1 game until the sixth inning when Cal State LA took a 3-2 lead on a two-run single by Emmons. The Golden Eagles made it 4-2 in the seventh when Drozdowski came in to score on a passed ball.
The Golden Eagles broke the game open in the eighth inning when they bunched together six hits to score five times. Salgado opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a groundout.
Gerardo Castaneda singled Salgado to third and
Thomas Chavez walked to load the bases. Atkins then delivered a two-run single to right to make it 6-2. Pacheco followed with a run-scoring single to make it 7-2 and a sacrifice fly by Drozdowski made it 8-2.
Hayden Luff's run-scoring double accounted for Cal State LA's fifth run of the inning.
Cal State LA completed the scoring in the ninth inning when Emmons singled and eventually scored on a passed ball.
Cal State LA will conclude the four-game series at Biola with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
