LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team dropped a painfully close doubles point and was unable to turn things around Thursday in a tough match against Biola.
The Golden Eagles dropped a pair of tiebreakers that ultimately decided the doubles point for Biola and the Eagles went on to a 7-0 win at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (1-3) was short-handed for the second straight match and dropped its third straight decision after a season-opening win.
The No. 3 doubles team of
Savaughna Mayo and
Courtlyn Lam were victorious, 6-3, over Ines Diaz and Lilly McNeill, but Biola took the other two sets in tiebreakers. Cal State LA's No. 1 duo of
Sarah Olmos and
Sakura Kurokawa jumped out to a 4-1 lead over Biola's Colbeyshae Emery and Mary Brascia, but fell, 7-6 and 7-2 in the tiebreaker.
Noa Davico and
Chelsey Ruiz suffered a similar fate and fell, 7-6, with a tiebreaker score of 7-5.
A pair of matches decided by 10-point tiebreakers highlighted the singles competitions. Olmos gave Emery, one of the top-ranked singles players in the region, all she could handle at No. 1 singles before falling, 7-5, 3-6, 10-4.
At No. 3 singles, Kurokawa won the second set to force a tiebreaker before Biola's Alexandria Mann prevailed, 6-4, 2-6, 10-4.
Noa Davico lost to Brascia at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4,
Chelsey Ruiz lost to Lilly McNeill at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-0,
Taylor Barnes lost to Gaby Carvajal at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-4 and Lam lost to Ines Diaz at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Cal State LA will return to action next Wednesday with a home match against Concordia.
