LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team battled in some warm conditions, but missing one of the Golden Eagles' top players was too much to overcome against a talented Pomona-Pitzer team.
The Golden Eagles dropped two of three doubles sets to miss out on the doubles point and
Sakura Kurokawa was the lone Cal State LA player to earn a singles point in a 6-1 loss to the Sagehens Friday at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (1-2) had to shift its lineup without its No. 1 singles player available.
Kurokawa, though, who moved up to the No. 2 singles spot, prevailed in the best match of the day, a marathon battle against Pomona-Pitzer's Nina Ye, taking an 11-9 decision in the super tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets. Kurokawa won the first set, 6-4, and dropped the second, 6-3, before pulling out the victory.
Chelsey Ruiz had the other singles match that required a tiebreaker. Ruiz fell to Marissa Markey at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
Sarah Olmos moved up to No. 1 singles and fell to Maria Lyven, 6-1, 6-0,
Berta Acero fell at No. 3 singles to Angie Zhou, 6-4, 6-1,
Taylor Barnes fell to Janie Marcus, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5 singles and
Courtlyn Lam fell to Georgia Ryan at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Ruiz and Acero posted a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles over Ryan and Patricia Aziz, but Pomona-Pitzer won at No. 1 doubles with Ye and Lyven beating Olmos and Kurokawa, 6-2 and at No. 2 doubles with Markey and Zhou beating
Savaughna Mayo and Lam, 6-3, to take the double point.
Cal State LA will return to action next Thursday with a home match against Biola beginning at 2 p.m.Â
