LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team placed four players on the 2022 United Soccer Coaches Men's Soccer NCAA Division II All-West Region team, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Alvaro Unanua earned first-team honors for a second straight season, while Cal State LA newcomers Bryan Ortega and Daniel Garcia joined him on the first team and freshman defender Marlon Radel was named to the second team. A total of 11 players were named to the first team and only nine received second-team honors in voting by the region's head coaches.

Cal State LA (15-2-3) had another sensational season for first-year head coach Michael Erush and won the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament title after finishing second in the CCAA during the regular season. Cal State LA was ranked eighth in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches at the end of the regular season and seeded No. 1 in the Super Region 4.

These are the second first-team all-region honors earned by Unanua, Ortega and Garcia this season. The trio also joined Oliver Diaz in earning top recognition from the D2 Conference Commissioners Association in voting by the region's college sports communicators.

Unanua completed a remarkable two-year career with the Golden Eagles with another tremendous season in 2022. He started all 20 games for the Golden Eagles and allowed only 14 goals with seven solo shutouts and three combined shutouts. He had a goals against average of 0.73 and a saves percentage of .833. He finished his career with a pair of national championships, one for Charleston in 2019 and one for Cal State LA in 2021.

Earlier, he was named the CCAA Goalkeeper of the Year for the second straight year as well as first-team All-CCAA honors. A returning All-American, he had a combined record of 33-4-6 in two years at Cal State LA and finished his collegiate career with an overall record of 58-4-7.

Ortega had a tremendous first season with the Golden Eagles and led the team in scoring with six goals and five assists for 17 points. He earned first-team All-CCAA honors after joining Cal State LA from Cerritos College.

Garcia was named the CCAA Midfielder of the Year after a sensational season for the Golden Eagles. He was also named the Most Valuable Offensive Player at the CCAA Tournament after helping Cal State LA to its second straight tournament title. Garcia joined the program from California Baptist. He finished the season with four goals and five assists for 13 points and was third on the team in scoring.

Radel was another top newcomer for the Golden Eagles and earned second-team All-Region honors in a fantastic first year with the program. He appeared in all 20 games for the Golden Eagles and started 19 times. He led the team in minutes played with 1,710 and also chipped in offensively with two goals and two assists for six points.
