Golden Eagles Fall In Five-Set Contest To Gators

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team returned to the court Saturday night and the Golden Eagles found themselves in another five-set battle with San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles and Gators had a contest decided in five sets for a third straight meeting, only this time it was host San Francisco State who prevailed at the end of a 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 17-15 California Collegiate Athletic Association decision. Cal State LA (7-4, 3-1 CCAA) lost for the first time in conference play, while San Francisco State (10-1, 3-1 CCAA) secured a weekend sweep.

Cal State LA had prevailed in a pair of five-set matches against the Gators toward the end of the 2019 season, winning on the last week of the regular season and in an opening-round match at the CCAA Tournament. This time, though, the Gators fought off one match point and took the final two points to get the win.

Karla Santos had a match-high 22 kills and 11 digs for the Golden Eagles, while Emily Elliott had 15 kills and five digs. Daisy Crenshaw had nine kills and four blocks.

Drew Morris had 11 kills for San Francisco State, while Izzy Isaak had 10.

Jeshmarie Suarez had 25 digs and 10 assists for the Golden Eagles, while Eliza Cannon had 50 set assists and 19 digs.

The Golden Eagles, who didn't get to play on Friday night after COVID-19 issues at Cal State Monterey Bay caused a forfeit, led early in the first set, 10-7, before the Gators rolled off six straight points to take the lead. Cal State LA got consecutive kills from Crenshaw, Santos and Elliott to tie it at 21-21, but the Gators took the next three points and ultimately the set.

Cal State LA bounced back to even the match in the second set, erasing a 20-17 deficit after a kill by Ashley Dittman, a ball-handling error and a kill by Elliott. After the Gators took a 21-20 lead, Cal State LA got a kill from Dittman, back-to-back blocks from Cannon and Crenshaw and kills from Crenshaw and Santos to take the set.

After dropping the third set, the Golden Eagles battled back in the fourth set to once again even the match. Cal State LA surged to a quick 6-1 lead, only to see San Francisco State rally back to tie it at 10-10. The Golden Eagles responded with a 7-0 run that included a kill by Santos, a pair of blocks by Elliott and Haley Roundtree and a solo block by Ayjah Landers. The Gators closed to within 22-20, but a ball-handling error, a kill by Santos and an attack error sent the match into a fifth set.

Cal State LA scored the first three points of the final set, but San Francisco State came back and took an 8-5 lead. A kill by Alejandra Negron and a block by Negron and Crenshaw tied it at 8-8 and Cal State LA got to match point at 14-13, only to see the Gators score the next two points. The Golden Eagles fought off a match point on a kill by Elliott, but a serving error and attack error ended the contest.

Cal State LA will return to action with a home match next Friday against Cal Poly Pomona at 5 p.m.
