LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team was able to turn the tide against unbeaten Cal Poly Pomona on Friday in University Gym.
After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles stormed back and handed the Broncos their first loss of the season, 24-26, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21 in an entertaining California Collegiate Athletic Association match. Cal State LA (8-4, 4-1 CCAA) put an end to a season-opening 11-match winning streak for No. 21 Cal Poly Pomona (11-1, 4-1 CCAA), which was off to its best start since 2005.
Emily Elliott led an explosive Cal State LA attack with 16 kills, while
Karla Santos had a tremendous match with 14 kills, three aces and a match-high 23 digs.
Alejandra Negron added 10 digs.
Jazmyn Wheeler had 13 kills for Cal Poly Pomona, while Daisy Duke had 11 kills and Jazminn Parrish had 10 kills.
Cal State LA had a 63-46 advantage in kills and hit at a .255 percentage to .165 for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona had a 9-6 advantage in blocks, while Cal State LA had a 10-5 advantage in kills.
Eliza Cannon had nine kills, 42 set assists and three blocks for the Golden Eagles, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had 14 digs and
Daisy Crenshaw had a team-high five blocks to go along with three kills.
Cal State LA showed some impressive resiliency after dropping a hard-fought opening set. The Golden Eagles opened up a 21-17 lead after a kill by
Haley Roundtree and still led 23-21 after another kill by Roundtree before the Broncos rallied. Another kill by Roundtree staved off one set point at 24-23, but the Broncos got a kill by Duke and a block by Duke and Kaitlan Tucker to take the set.
The Golden Eagles bounced right back and evened the match with a strong second-set performance. The Golden Eagles used a 5-0 run to break a 14-14 tie to gain control. Three straight attack errors, a kill by Cannon and another attack error put the Golden Eagles ahead, 19-14. A kill by Negron made it 23-18 and a kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-19. Cal Poly Pomona pulled to within 24-22, but a kill by Negron ended the set and tied the match.
Cal State LA then grabbed the lead with an outstanding effort in the third set. The Golden Eagles opened up a 12-4 lead after an ace by
Ayjah Landers and weathered a Cal Poly Pomona rally that cut the margin to just two points at 14-12. Leading 19-15, the Golden Eagles got kills from Negron and Elliott, a block by Crenshaw and Cannon and two Cal Poly Pomona attack errors to get to set point at 24-15. After Cal Poly Pomona fought off one set point, a kill by Cannon gave the Golden Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Cal State LA kept the pressure on and opened up a quick 7-2 lead in the fourth set. The Golden Eagles led by as much as 14-6 and preserved a lead the rest of the way. Cal Poly Pomona pulled to within 22-19, but a service error and a kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-20. After a Cal Poly Pomona point, Cannon delivered her ninth kill of the match to end it.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home match against Cal State San Bernardino at 7 p.m.
