LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team took a good shot at the California Collegiate Athletic Association leaders, but Cal State San Bernardino was able to pass the test.
The Golden Eagles took a tight opening set and had late leads in the second, but the Coyotes stayed poised and rebounded for a 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-19 victory in University Gym. Cal State LA (8-5, 4-2 CCAA), which handed previously unbeaten Cal Poly Pomona its first loss of the season on Friday, settled for a weekend split against teams ranked in the top-25. Cal Poly Pomona was ranked 21st, while Cal State San Bernardino, the 2019 NCAA Division II champions, entered the weekend ranked No. 12.Â
The Coyotes (11-3, 6-0 CCAA) remained the lone unbeaten team in the conference and ran their winning streak to eight.Â
Emily Elliott had a match-high 17 kills for the Golden Eagles, while
Karla Santos had 13 kills and 12 digs.Â
Alexis Cardoza and Jalyn Hayes had 14 kills each to lead the Coyotes, while Jenna Patton had 12 kills and four blocks.
Eliza Cannon had nine kills, 34 set assists, nine blocks and 12 digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Haley Roundtree added six blocks and a pair of kills.
Cal State San Bernardino had a 61-52 advantage in kills, including a 31-16 advantage over the final two sets. The Coyotes outhit the Golden Eagles, .255-.232. The Golden Eagles had a 13-8 advantage in blocks, while Cal State San Bernardino had nine aces and 10 service errors, while Cal State LA had four aces and seven errors.
The Golden Eagles started well and overcame a 16-11 deficit in the opening set. Cal State LA was still down 19-15, before a kill by Elliott and a pair of kills by
Alejandra Negron made it 19-18. Kills by Negron and Elliott and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a brief 21-20 lead and, after the Coyotes tied it at 21-21, a pair of kills by Cannon sandwiched around a block by Cannon and Roundtree got Cal State LA to set point. After the Coyotes saved two set points, another block by Cannon and Roundtree ended the set.
The Golden Eagles then had a golden opportunity to take a 2-0 sets lead, but couldn't hold on. Cal State LA took a 16-11 lead following a service ace by
Ayjah Landers and a kill by Santos, but the Coyotes roared back and eventually took a 24-22 lead. Back-to-back kills by Santos tied it at 24-24 and a Santos kill saved another set point for the Golden Eagles before a kill by Patton and a block by Hayes and Asia Clarke evened the match.
The Golden Eagles fell behind, 12-7, in the third set, but used a kill by Cannon, a block by Cannon and
Daisy Crenshaw, a solo block by Crenshaw and an attack error to get to within 12-11. The Coyotes responded by taking a 21-14 lead before a service error, two kills by Elliott, a kill by Crenshaw and an attack error pulled the Golden Eagles to within 21-19. A kill by Elliott and a block by Cannon and Crenshaw got the Golden Eagles to within 22-21, but the Coyotes scored the final three points of the set to take a 2-1 lead.
Cal State LA led very early in the fourth set, but ultimately was unable to generate any momentum and Cal State San Bernardino moved out to leads of 15-10, 19-14 and 22-15. The Golden Eagles fought off two match points on a kill by Elliott and an attack error, but a kill by Clarke ended the match.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a match at Chico State.
