CHICO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team got its offense clicking in a big road California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Chico State.
After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles roared back and beat the Wildcats, 20-25, 25-23, ,25-17, 25-21 in Acker Gym. Cal State LA (9-5, 5-2 CCAA) held off a big Chico State rally in the second set to even the match and then controlled the final two sets for the win.
Alejandra Negron recorded a season high 16 kills and two service aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Emily Elliott had 12 kills, one ace and a pair of blocks.
Karla Santos added nine kills, three aces and three blocks in three sets of action.
Makaela Keeve had 18 kills to lead Chico State (5-10, 1-6 CCAA).
Eliza Cannon had 32 set assists and a pair of aces, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 12 digs.
Cal State LA had a 50-46 advantage in kills and hit at a .313 percentage to a .189 clip for the Wildcats. Cal State LA also had a 10-5 advantage in blocks and had nine aces.
After dropping the first set, the Golden Eagles stormed out to a 24-19 lead after a kill by Negron. Chico State, though, fought off four set points to make it 24-23 before a kill by Santos ended the set and evened the match.
Cal State LA scored four straight points on kills by
Shelby Grubbs,
Victoria Duarte, an attack error and a kill by Elliott to open up a 15-9 lead in the third set. The Golden Eagles maintained a safe advantage the rest of the way and won the set following a kill by Santos and an attack error.
The Golden Eagles had to rally late to avoid a fifth set. Cal State LA fell behind, 16-12, before a service error, a kill by Santos and two attack errors evened the set. Cal State LA trailed again, but an attack error, a block by Santos and Duarte and another attack error gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good.
Kills by Santos and Duarte pushed the Golden Eagles ahead, 21-18, and a block by Santos and Duarte and a kill by Negron made it 23-19. A kill by Negron got the Golden Eagles to match point and a service error ended it.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a road match at Stanislaus State.
